This Suzuki T500 had been standing for a number of years with petrol in the tank and had succumbed to rusting through out the inside of the unit. The tank was first photographed (these shots were taken both in the workshop and outside hence the variation in colour) and then wrapped in its first cocoon then with a final wrap of heavier plastic prior to the chemical work.  This protects the outside paintwork where it is to be saved.  The tank was then de-rusted and lined with GTS 1750 resin.

This picture is of a bike similar to the one that this tank came from and is shown for example only. The customer's bike had stood for many years at the back of a shed at his fathers house and it was only on clearing it out that he decided to restore it.
He did not want the tank welded and so it was decided to use one of the new epoxy putties and then have the tank lined with Caswell GTS1750. The customer had the tank blast cleaned prior to us receiving it and this showed up some of the rust damage created over the years. The internal rust was such that it was decided to first wash out the inside and then to convert the rust to a dead, inert finish and so help with the strength of the item which would then be improved with the bonding of the resin.
The picture gallery shows the tank as received and the progress in making it sound. the epoxy putty was only used at the top of the tank where the panel had been affected and was pushed into the hole and using a tool inside the tank was turned into a form of rivet. The smallest holes of 1mm or less we filled in the normal process of the lining. Using the conversion chemical identified the pin prick holes and their size.
The tank received a lining of GTS1750 and after curing and water testing was past back to the owner. The tank then went to Goldburns Finishers of Lindford, Hampshire for a complete paint job.  We are awaiting a picture of the finished tank which will be posted here.

  KAWASAKI KH400 Tank
This tank had already had a liner put inside but, as it was not ethanol proof, it succumbed and flaked inside and required removal or making sound before it was re-lined. The paint work on this tank was original and in good condition which the customer wanted protected.
The liner had been put in due to rust creating small holes and when using old formula petrol, worked well. However with the inclusion of Ethanol in our "Green" fuel it acted as a solvent and the liner bubbled and cracked. To remove this liner would have exposed the holes and the lines remover would have escaped from the tank and into the plastic cocoon, destroying the paint work. It was decided to remove any flakes and small bubbles by mechanical means and then re-line which prove successful.

KTM 950 SUPERMOTO 2007
This tank is manufactured from a plastic/ABS type product which is not resistant to Ethanol.  The result is that the fuel softens the plastic and the liquid and fumes find their way through the wall causing bubbling of the decals, wraps and eventually holes. The tank ws cleaned and lined with Caswell GTS1750 resin.

Ariel Red Hunter 1938
This Red Hunter was in the process of being restored and the company doing the work asked us to look at the tank. It had been lined due to rust and damage, but the liner had failed due to ethanol petrol A second liner was put over the top and that also failed. The restoring company called us as the were not sure if the liners could be removed without damaging the paintwork.  We inspected the tank and agreed that we would do everything possible to try to save the paint but if the resin remover did leak into the cocoon we could not be held responsible and they would re-finish the tank.

The following three pictures are from the initial survey and show the new liner over the top of the old  Some reaction has taken place between the two and it has caused the white liner to fail when in use with ethanol petrol..

The three photographs here shows the the amount of old liner material, of both linings which together weighed in a 1200 grams, the cleaned tank down to the metal indicating the rust damage that would be removed or converted to a dead surface before lining and the finished tank with a black lining. The final picture is the lining fully cured and showing the reflection of the light

Here you can see where the fuel has penetrated the last lay of fibreglass and has caused the layer to move away from the shell. This has then cracked and flaked off.

Although the ethanol had penetrated through to the outside of the fibreglass shell of the tank and caused some bubbling of the paint, the customer wanted to maintain the finish and so we took our usual care in preserving the finish.  However on receiving the tank back he decided to have the tank re-finished and started to remove the old paint. This exposed some of the damage that the ethanol and possibly some vibration had caused and you can see the cracks in the gel-coat. We had carried out a water and low pressure test on the tank and knew that the integrity of the inside of the tank was good and the customers paint shop said that hey could effect a good repair to the external cracks. We await pictures of the finished unit.

Some of the Bultaco tanks we have lined. The customer asked for black linings in these as the petrol damage showed staining to the inside of the tank.
Description
The owner of this Bultaco motorcycle is carrying out a restoration, maintaining its condition as the time it stopped competitive use. it has a good history and it will go into the customers collection. The tank shows the hard work it was put through in its time and he wanted to preserve this. The machine will be used for display purposes and will use petrol in the tank, hence having it lined. The customer wanted a clear lining and a finish that preserved the look inside the tank, including some small moulding stamps which were in black ink. The outside would not be painted and so it needed to be preserved in its original state. We completed the work to the customers total satisfaction.
